Former PwC Australia CRO Sean Gregory Outlines the Future of Enterprise Risk and Strategic Governance
Sean Gregory, former Chief Risk Officer at PwC Australia and a highly respected boardroom advisor, has shared his perspective on the evolving future of enterprise risk management and strategic governance, calling for a more integrated, decision-driven approach to leadership in an increasingly complex business environment.
Drawing on decades of experience advising boards, CEOs, and executive teams across financial services, healthcare, technology, and high-growth ventures, Gregory highlighted the growing disconnect between traditional risk frameworks and the realities facing modern organisations.
“Risk can no longer be treated as a compliance exercise or a defensive function,” Gregory said. “In today’s environment, effective risk management must actively support strategic decision-making, growth, and long-term value creation.”
Gregory emphasised that enterprise risk management is entering a new phase—one that requires boards and leadership teams to move beyond static reporting and embrace dynamic, forward-looking governance models. He noted that geopolitical uncertainty, digital disruption, regulatory change, and rapid market shifts are forcing organisations to rethink how risk, strategy, and performance intersect.
According to Gregory, the most resilient organisations are those where boards and executives work collaboratively, using risk insights to inform critical decisions rather than constrain them. “Strong governance doesn’t slow organisations down,” he said. “It enables better, faster decisions by bringing clarity to uncertainty.”
During his tenure at PwC Australia, Gregory played a pivotal role in shaping enterprise risk, governance, and regulatory strategies for some of the country’s most complex organisations. He now serves as a trusted advisor, chairman, and board member to a range of businesses, helping leadership teams navigate growth, transformation, and market expansion.
Gregory also stressed the importance of human judgment and leadership capability alongside data and frameworks. “The future of enterprise risk isn’t just about better models or dashboards,” he said. “It’s about leadership maturity—how boards and executives think, challenge assumptions, and make decisions under pressure.”
As organisations face an era defined by uncertainty and opportunity in equal measure, Gregory’s insights reinforce the need for governance models that are practical, adaptive, and closely aligned with strategic intent.
