As of 2023, the industry was valued at USD 2.54 billion and is projected to reach USD 6.92 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.4%. This rapid growth reflects the nation’s aggressive push towards sustainable energy solutions and localized battery production.

Why Lithium-ion Batteries Are the Backbone of India’s Energy Transition

Lithium-ion batteries have emerged as a cornerstone of India’s evolving energy landscape. Their application spans various sectors including electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy storage, telecom infrastructure, and consumer electronics. Their superior energy density, lightweight structure, and long lifecycle make them the most viable option for modern energy needs.

EV Adoption Driving Industry Expansion

India is not just consuming batteries—it is preparing to become a major manufacturing hub. The government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes are channeling investments into battery manufacturing infrastructure, aiming to localize the entire battery value chain.

This includes cell manufacturing, assembly, and eventual recycling. States like Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Maharashtra are emerging as hotspots for battery manufacturing, offering both financial and land incentives for new players. This strong regulatory backing ensures that the industry’s momentum is sustainable and scalable in the long term.

Challenges in Raw Material Sourcing

Despite the growth potential, the industry faces a crucial bottleneck: access to raw materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. India currently imports most of these materials, primarily from South America, Australia, and Africa. This reliance exposes the industry to supply chain disruptions and volatile global prices.

To address this, India is exploring strategic international partnerships and investing in mining rights abroad. The recent discovery of lithium reserves within Indian territory, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir, could be a game-changer if developed effectively in the coming years.

Battery Recycling and Second-Life Applications

Another emerging dimension is the battery recycling and second-life application segment. Used lithium-ion batteries can be repurposed for energy storage or harvested for valuable materials. This not only supports a circular economy but also reduces environmental impact. Establishing a robust ecosystem for battery collection, dismantling, and repurposing will be crucial for maintaining long-term sustainability in the industry.
