Summary

The history of California prunes began in the late 1700s when Spanish missionaries brought European plum trees to California from Mexico. In 1850, Louis Pellier and his brother Pierre grafted a sweet French plum cultivar called the "pruneau d'Agen" onto wild plum trees in "Pellier's Gardens" near Mission San Jose. The resulting trees began producing California prunes a few years later.
