Insigts10 report estimates that the Canada Clinical Nutrition Market is estimated to be valued at approximately $2.45 billion in 2023, with projections to reach around $3.53 billion by 2030, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.34% during this period. Companies are increasingly focusing on personalized and targeted clinical nutrition solutions to deliver new market growth opportunities. Personalization and targeted approaches are supported by specific formulations that meet the nutritional needs of patients suffering from chronic diseases and associated illnesses.

Chronic Disease Surge

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, nearly 6 million Canadians are currently living with chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, the demand for specialized nutritional products is more critical than ever. Furthermore, the proportion of Canadians aged 65 and older is expected to rise from 17% in 2021 to 25% by 2035, creating a pressing need for tailored clinical nutrition solutions for older adults. Furthermore, 63% of Canadian adults are either overweight or obese, which is a major risk factor for chronic conditions like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

In Canada, the intersection of diabetes and hypertension presents significant public health challenges. Approximately 10% of Canadians live with diagnosed diabetes, with an estimated 30% experiencing diabetes or prediabetes. Among adults aged 60 to 79, nearly 18% are diagnosed with diabetes. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects about 25% of Canadian adults. The prevalence increases with age, particularly among those over 60, where rates can exceed 50%.

Diabetes and Hypertension

Studies indicate that around 50% of people with diabetes also have hypertension, which significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular complications. The Canada clinical nutrition market is experiencing significant growth, driven by major players like Abbott Nutrition, Nestlé Health Science, and Danone Canada. Abbott Nutrition recently launched its innovative Similac Pro-Advance infant formula with 2′-Fucosyllactose Oligosaccharide (2′-FL) in Canada, a groundbreaking ingredient aimed at improving immune health in infants.

Nestlé Health Science, a subsidiary of the multinational food giant Nestlé S.A., expanded its portfolio by acquiring Orgain, a company specializing in plant-based nutrition products. Meanwhile, Danone Canada introduced its new Light & Free yogurt line, offering high protein content with no artificial sweeteners and reduced sugar to cater to health-conscious consumers. In February 2022, Nestlé Health Science announced its acquisition of Orgain, a company specializing in plant-based nutrition products.

Plant-Based Expansion

This acquisition aims to expand Nestlé’s portfolio in the growing plant-based nutrition segment, enhancing its offerings in clinical nutrition for various health needs, including those of children and individuals with dietary restrictions. The stringent regulatory environment from Health Canada can delay product approvals and commercialization, potentially hindering growth, while the lack of reimbursement for many clinical nutrition products under public healthcare plans can make these products inaccessible for some individuals.

Additionally, the high costs associated with research and development, particularly for smaller companies, can be a barrier to bringing innovative products to market. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of clinical nutrition, there is still a lack of awareness among the general population about the benefits of specialized nutritional products, and overcoming resistance to change from some healthcare professionals is crucial for wider adoption and acceptance. In May 2023, the Canadian government announced funding of $84.6 million to combat malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Nutrition Challenges

This initiative aims to improve access to clinical nutrition services and support the development of new nutritional products, benefiting companies in the clinical nutrition market. The government’s focus on nutrition is further supported by organizations such as the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force (CMTF), which plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of nutrition in daily life.
