Bio-D’s Closed Loop Initiative Reaches New Milestone with 260 Containers Returned in February
Bio-D, the UK’s leading manufacturer of environmentally responsible cleaning products, has announced a record-breaking month for their innovative Closed Loop recycling programme, with 260 of their 20-litre containers returned and recycled in February 2025. This achievement marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles, bringing the total number of 20-litre containers returned and relaundered since the program’s inception in May 2021 to over 15,699 units.
Eco-Friendly Initiative
“Every container returned represents a conscious choice to reduce waste and lower carbon emissions,” said a spokesperson for Bio-D. “We’re immensely grateful to our customers for embracing this initiative and helping us close the loop on our packaging lifecycle.” The Closed Loop programme, initially launched for wholesale partners, has now been expanded to include individual customers and independent stores across the UK.
The process allows for the collection, cleaning, and refilling of Bio-D’s 20-litre containers, significantly reducing the need for new plastic production and minimizing waste. The program’s success builds on Bio-D’s existing sustainability credentials, which include saving over 85 tons of CO2 emissions in 2021 through the use of post-consumer recycled bottles. An impressive 92.7% of the company’s bottle and container sales that year were in PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic.
Reducing Waste
To ensure the programme remains environmentally beneficial, Bio-D has optimized the return process to accept containers in multiples of two, identifying this as the most efficient and carbon-effective approach for smaller quantities. Customers can return their empty containers free of charge through a simple drop-off service, with clear guidelines provided to ensure proper packaging for transport.
“Our Closed Loop initiative is a genuine ‘No Brainer Container’ solution,” the spokesperson added. “By washing, refilling, and reusing these containers, we’re creating a circular system that benefits both our customers and the planet.” The company, which manufactures all its products using solar energy and naturally derived ingredients, continues to lead the cleaning product industry in sustainable practices. This latest milestone reinforces Bio-D’s position as a pioneer in environmental responsibility within the sector.
