Qatar continues to strengthen its international communication and media strategy under the leadership of Sheikh Thamer bin Hamad Al Thani, Director of the International Media Office (IMO). Since his appointment in March 2023, Sheikh Thamer has been instrumental in advancing Qatar’s global visibility and ensuring consistent and accurate representation of the country’s initiatives worldwide.

A Background in International Media and Diplomacy

Prior to his current role, Sheikh Thamer served as Deputy Director of the Government Communications Office (GCO) starting in 2019, where he strengthened institutional communication channels and facilitated international media outreach.

Between 2018 and 2019, he was Media Attaché at Qatar’s Embassy in London, focusing on building partnerships with media organizations, policy think tanks, and international institutions across the United Kingdom and Europe. His efforts supported Qatar’s constructive engagement in regional and global discussions during a period of heightened international focus.

Professional Foundations and Digital Media Expertise

Sheikh Thamer began his career at the GCO in 2016 as Head of International Media, coordinating media relations for government entities and state delegations. Earlier, he worked at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) as Head of Special Projects, focusing on digital engagement, youth programs, and the integration of media analytics in governance.

Academic Excellence and Global Perspective

He is a graduate of Northwestern University in Qatar, where he studied Communications and Media Studies, gaining insight into international journalism, media systems, and global public diplomacy.
