Ethiopian Airlines Inaugurates New Airport in Yabello, Strengthening Regional Connectivity

Ethiopian Airlines has opened a new airport in Yabello, southern Oromia, costing 1 billion (7.1 million USD). This facility will boost connectivity, trade, and tourism in the region. CEO Mesfin Tasew said the project reflects the airline’s vision of the 2035 strategy to expand aviation infrastructure and strengthen the Ethiopian network. Yabello, Ethiopia —- Ethiopian Airlines has officially inaugurated a new airport in Yabello, southern Oromia, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to expand aviation infrastructure across the country.

Airport Development

The project, which cost more than 1 billion ETB (7.1 million USD), is located 11 kilometers from Yabello town in the Borena Zone. It includes a newly constructed airfield, access roads, a temporary terminal, and supporting infrastructure. The opening ceremony was attended by government officials, airline executives, and local representatives.

Speaking at the event, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew highlighted the importance of development for the local community and the wider region and said: “The completion of the Yabello Airport project demonstrates Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to advancing aviation infrastructure that transforms lives and connects communities across Ethiopia. This is a transformative moment for the local community and the entire region, and as the flag carrier of Ethiopia, we are proud to have made this moment a reality.”

Aviation Milestone

The airline expects the new facility to serve as a driver of trade, tourism, and investment in southern Oromia, while strengthening the link between the region and the rest of the country. Yabello Airport is one of several regional airport projects developed under Ethiopian Airlines’ broader strategy to expand Ethiopia’s domestic aviation network.

The carrier, which currently flies to more than 160 destinations worldwide, is also a member of the Star Alliance and is pursuing its long-term growth plan, “Vision 2035.” Beyond Ethiopia, the airline maintains strategic partnerships with carriers in Togo, Malawi, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
