Revolutionary Online Beam-Calculation Company take on Derby University Intern to Bolster Marketing Operations
September 12, 2018 ( PR Submission Site ) Derbyshire based new start-up Build Calcs Ltd specialise in providing a simple and inexpensive way to obtain beam calculations. Founders Kevin Taylor and Nick Walker combined skills to launch their website steelbeamcalculator.co.uk. Kevin has over 20 years experience as a structural engineer, whilst Nick has a background in software engineering. Their service allows users to enter building measurements to generate a list of recommended beams instantly.
The site has proven popular amongst customers, mainly due to its convenience, but also because it is a cheaper alternative to employing a structural engineer. In September 2018, their website was revamped, with a new design introduced reflecting a more premium product. It is hard to believe the site is the product of the work of two people given its seamless design, which reflects that of a multinational company.
One of the challenges associated with setting up a new company, is the marketing of the service. Spreading the word and building the reputation of the service has proven to be vital in attracting customers for the Steel Beam Calculator. In a bid to obtain fresh ideas on how to achieve this, Kevin and Nick turned to the University of Derby internship programme to seek a student intern who would work on a part-time basis on marketing activities. Third year Business studies student James Walker was chosen to take on the role.
Activities undertaken include the creation and launching of adverts on a number platforms including LinkedIn and Facebook, whilst an email campaign reengaging inactive users was attempted. A large amount of research in to the best methods of advertising was undertaken, helping Build Calcs to use their resources wisely when choosing methods of advertising.
Intern James commented: “The opportunity to work for a new start-up company was one that I was excited to pursue. I have been given autonomy to make decisions and have been supported in trying my own ideas, for which I am grateful. Whilst I have thoroughly enjoyed studying for my degree, the real-world experience that I have gained from this internship cannot be replicated in the classroom.”
Following the release of their new site, Kevin and Nick will turn their attention to the up-and-coming timberbeamcalculator.co.uk, which allows the calculations of timber beams. This will see them continue to increase the scope of their service, making them a stand out company, both in the UK and USA, with regards to beam calculation for construction.
