Two Communities Receive 2023 Main Street Alabama Designation
Main Street Alabama, the renowned organization dedicated to revitalizing and preserving the historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts of cities across the state, is pleased to announce the selection of two communities for its prestigious Designation program. The newly designated communities include Centreville and Russellville. These communities will now benefit from Main Street Alabama’s comprehensive technical services, commencing this month.
The Designation Program
The Designation program is a significant milestone for communities aiming to revitalize their core districts and foster economic growth. Main Street Alabama’s rigorous selection process ensures that designated communities access expert guidance, resources, and tools with a proven track record of success. By selecting Centreville and Russellville, Main Street Alabama acknowledges these communities’ immense potential and commitment to preserving their unique character and enhancing their downtown districts. Through the organization’s technical services, these communities will receive invaluable support to cultivate thriving local economies, attract visitors, and foster a sense of community pride. Centreville (pop. 2,781) is interested in the historic restoration of existing buildings while creating a more vibrant and sustainable community. Centreville is in Bibb County and is the county seat. Centreville was founded in 1823 by John Williams Walker, a former governor of Alabama. Centreville is a community dedicated to honoring its history through preservation projects, cultivating the natural resources of the Cahaba River, and developing an uptown center focused on economic and community vibrancy. It was incorporated in 1870 and is home to the iconic Bibb County Bank and Trust Building, which was recently purchased to be restored.
The city of Russellville (pop. 10,866) expressed interest in improving building facades and creating an inviting downtown area for residents and visitors alike. Russellville is a city in Franklin County and is the county seat. Russellville was founded in 1819 by John Russell, a pioneer from North Carolina. The city was named for him and was incorporated in 1824. In recent years, downtown Russellville has seen streetscape improvements, eight loft apartments, and a five-room boutique hotel. Since June 2022, Russellville reported 6 new businesses creating 7 jobs and private investment of $805, 531. Main Street Alabama’s commitment to supporting designated communities extends beyond the initial Designation phase. Through ongoing training, advocacy, and collaboration, the organization remains dedicated to the long-term success and sustainability of the communities it serves.
