Chino, CA ( PR Submission Site ) November 14, 2018:– Barsoum Dental Care, a general and specialty dentistry provider with offices in Upland and Chino, CA announced today the focus of its second annual ‘Holiday Toy Drive’. All donations from this year’s event will go to Pomona-based House of Ruth (houseofruthinc.org) – an organization dedicated to providing life-saving services to families victimized by domestic violence.

“Domestic violence is an all-too-common and very serious public health problem with devastating consequences for families. Often these victims are children who can suffer severe physical, emotional and mental health issues for the rest of their lives,” said Dr. Maher Barsoum, lead practitioner and founder of Barsoum Dental Care. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to team up with our staff and patients to provide some support to these families during the holidays through the toy drive.” This will be the 2nd annual Holiday Toy Drive for the organization and is expected to continue to be held annually. Last year’s event raised dozens of toys for non-profit Adonai Families (adonaifamilies.org), an organization committed to serving families coping with a child with cancer or other serious illness.

According to event organizer and staff member at the Upland office Chaz Macias: “The number of toys we were able to collect last year was amazing and we wanted to maintain that momentum going into this year. Keeping with the theme of helping children and families in need, we felt that the House of Ruth was the right choice to receive this year’s donations because they do such great work to provide essential, life-saving services to families in crisis free of charge.

Understandably, parents in these horrific situations often don’t have the time or the resources to get out and shop for the holidays. We wanted to do what we could to ease that burden a little and bring some holiday cheer.” Patients and staff at both locations, as well as the general public, are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to during normal business hours between November 15th and December 15th, 2018. Toys should be non-violent in nature (no guns, knives, swords etc.) and will be given to House of Ruth shortly after the conclusion of the event.

Esteemed Specialist Periodontist Joins Dr. Michael’s Dental Clinic in Dubai

Dr. Rima is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She brings a decade of evidence-based approach in Periodontology and Implantology.

She graduated with a dental degree (BDS) from Beirut Arab University in Lebanon in 2006. She then attended Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine in the US where she received her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (C.A.G.S.) in Periodontology in 2008. She also received the prestigious Award for Excellence in Periodontology from Boston University in the same year. In 2011, Dr. Rima earned Doctor of Science (DSc) in Oral Biology from Boston University.

As a Periodontist, Dr. Rima is an expert in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. She performs a wide range of treatments including but not limited to scaling and root planing, periodontal pocket reduction, gum graft surgery, gummy smile treatment, gingival depigmentation and regenerative procedures to reverse some of the damage caused by periodontal disease.

“I have always loved the link between oral health and systemic health. Knowing that gum disease is closely related to general systemic diseases in the body and being an academic at heart, I wanted a platform to educate and share this knowledge with my patients. I want to spread awareness about prevention and oral health and I also love those periodontics is a speciality that uses minimally invasive techniques to provide a healthy and esthetic housing for the teeth,” said Dr. Rima

Pursuing her passion for academia, Dr. Rima served as Assistant Professor at the Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at Lebanese University, as well as Clinical Associate Professor at the Periodontology Division of the Oral Surgical Department at the Beirut Arab University.

Dr. Rima was a research scholar at the Forsyth Institute and Boston University from 2008 – 2011. She has a number of publications to her credit and served as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Oral and Dental Sciences (IJODS) from 2014 – 2018. She was also a member of the scientific committee of the Lebanese Dental Association from 2012 – 2015. Her scholarly contributions include journal publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

When asked what advice she has for patients with gum disease, Dr. Rima said, “Gum disease is something you have to learn to live with. Once it progresses to periodontitis it becomes irreversible. That does not mean that it cannot be managed. Constant monitoring by your Periodontist and regular hygiene visits are a must, as well as proper oral hygiene regimen at home.”

“Periodontal treatment and maintenance rely on decreasing the levels of bacterial plaque as well as reducing the external factors that might increase the intensity of the disease such as smoking, obesity, diabetes and heart disease. By controlling and or eliminating those external factors you will put yourself on the road to healthier gums free from bleeding and bad odor.”
